NOBLE, MARY CATHERINE nee Long

Obituary: Published in the Chariton Newspaper

With great sorrow the Herald-Patriot chronicles the passing away of Mrs. Chas. F. Noble, which occurred at the family home, 310 N. Seventh Street in Chariton, on Monday evening, March 20, 1922, after a short illness with pneumonia.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Hagan of Des Moines, an old time friend of the family, assisted by her pastor Rev. E. A. McKim, were held at the Christian church yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton Cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful and bore testimony to the high regard in which deceased was held.

Mary Catherine Long, daughter of Alexander and Mary Long, was born in Indiana on July 21, 1842. Her father died when she was an infant* and in September, 1854, the family moved to Lucas County, Iowa making the trip in a covered wagon and bringing their only effects with them. She, with the other children, took turns in walking and driving the cow and calf. With this slow way of transportation, they were four weeks in making the trip from Jackson County, Indiana, to this county. On August 11, 1861, she was married at LaGrange, Iowa, to Mr. Charles F. Noble, who survives her. In 1867 they moved to a farm in Washington Township, and in 1885 to a farm in Whitebreast Township, where they lived until 1896, when they came to Chariton and this city has since been their home. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Noble, three of whom preceded their mother in death. Those surviving are Ira C. Noble of Whitebreast Township, and Mrs. Melita Marshall of Chariton, both of whom were with her during her last illness. Seven grandchildren are also living. Mrs. Noble was the last of a family of eight children. She united with the Christian Church in early life and has ever lived a confident Christian life. She was an active and faithful worker in the church and a regular attendant of church services until her health prevented her presence. She was one of the very early pioneers of Lucas County, and during her residence here of nearly sixty eight years, she had won the esteem and regard of all with whom she came in contact by her many lovable and sterling qualities. During the hardships of frontier days she was never found lacking when others needed assistance, and in later years her neighbors will testify to her many kindly ministrations. In the home she was ever kind, thoughtful and devoted to the interests of her loved ones. On August 11th of last year, Mr. and Mrs. Noble celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage. Mr. Noble will sadly miss his beloved companion of so many years, and to him and the sorrowing children and other relatives, the sympathy of the entire community will be extended.
