Harry R. Hayes, was born and educated on Mt. Nebo. When a young man he moved with his father to Homestead, Ind. He married Eliza (Macey) McElfresh and they had eight children. He became the leading merchant in Homestead and was for many years Post Master. When his family of children had become about grown, his wife died. He has been a most interested member of the committee on Hayes history.

Harry R. Hayes Rites Wednesday
Funeral services for Harry R. Hayes, 83, retired Lawrenceburg business man and former post-
master here, who died in his home at Homestead Saturday, Nov. 25, were conducted in Fitch Bros. Funeral Home Wednesday at 2 p. m. Rev. Floyd L. Cook, pastor of Hamline Chapel Methodist Church officiated and burial was in Greendale cemetery.
Mr. Hayes was born on Mt. Nebo, in Hamilton county, O., Jan. 1, 1867, the son of Stephen B. and. Mary Blrdsall Hayes, He moved with his father and other members of the family, to Dearborn county at an early age and on March 24, 1896 was married to Eliza (Macey) McElfresh. .
When he was a young man he purchased and began, with his brother Charles, the operation of a general store at Homestead. and upon the retirement of his brother he conducted the business alone for many years. His wife died during the flu epidemic of 1918-19.
_Mr. Hayes was Republican County Chairman of Dearborn county for a long time; and was postmaster at Lawrenceburg from 1933 to 1936. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and always took a keen interest in the church and Sunday School. He was active in the
Odd Fellow Lodge when it was in existence in Lawrenceburg and was trustee of that organization for many years. He was active, all his life, in the Hayes family Association and the Mt. Nebo Society. .
He is survived by five daughters, Miss Elmo at home, Mrs. Mary Lee Cornelius and Mrs. Jane Kerr of Lawrenceburg; Mrs. Nina Donahue of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. Freda Elliott of Groesbeck, Cincinnati, O., and two sons, Clayton B. Hayes of Lawrenceburg and Orville Hayes of Norwood, O.
