Maxime J. Derbes, Jr., at his home in Covington, LA, on Thursday, April 28, 2005. He is the beloved husband of Kathleen Marie McCullough Derbes; father of Maxime, III and David Stephen Derbes; grandfather of Alexander Benjamin, Zachary John, Christina Claire Derbes and Michelle Derbes Lynch, Lori Ann Derbes Rowe and David Stephen, Jr.; step-grandfather of Ashlee and Stuart Galvis and Ryan, Mimi and Reed Duncan; and great-grandfather of Emily Rowe, Mia Derbes and Isabel Derbes. He is also survived by two sisters, Phyllis Derbes Eagan and Glen Derbes Eagan. Age 82 years. A native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of St. Tammany Parish for the 45 years. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 3:00 PM from the Chapel at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, Inc., 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to the Second Harvest Food Bank, 1201 Sams Ave., Jefferson, LA 70123.

Obituary of Maxime J. Derbes Jr., real estate appraiser

Maxime J. Derbes Jr., a nationally prominent real estate appraiser, died Thursday at his home in Covington. He was 82.

During his long career, Mr. Derbes performed appraisals for many significant public projects, include interstate highway and railroad projects in and around New Orleans, the federal strategic petroleum reserve in Louisiana and the right of way for the Superconducting Super Collider near Dallas.

As a real estate appraiser, Mr. Derbes was certified in seven states and served as a consultant and an educator in the field.

He contributed to three nationally published texts and had more than 40 nationally published articles on real estate topics.

He taught real estate subjects at Loyola University and composed and taught a one-week course on industrial appraising for the Appraisal Institute at more than 20 universities throughout the United States.

He lectured extensively, including talks in Mexico and Brazil. He trained numerous local real estate appraisers.

Mr. Derbes was born in New Orleans and lived in Covington for the past 45 years.

He was a graduate of Jesuit High School (1939) and the Tulane University Business School. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. After World War II, he joined the real estate firm of his father.

He was the past president of the Jaycees in New Orleans.

He served on the parish council of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9240.

He served as a member of the board of the Continental Savings and Loan Association. For 27 years he served as secretary-treasurer of St. Tammany Sewer District No. 1.

He received numerous professional awards, including the National Right of Way Man of the Year, Louisiana Realtor of the year, Metropolitan New Orleans Realtor of the year, and first place in the manuscript competition of the Appraisal Journal of the Appraisal Institute.

Mr. Derbes was past president of Valuation Network Inc., the Louisiana-Mississippi chapter of the Society of Industrial Realtors, the Louisiana Chapter of the International Right of Way Association and the local chapter of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers.

He was a local vice president of the Louisiana Realtors Association. He served on the national board of directors of the Counselors of Real Estate and the national Executive Committee of the National Association of Realtors.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Marie McCollough Derbes; two sons, David S. Derbes and Maxime J. Derbes III; two sisters, Phyllis D. Eagan and Glen D. Eagan; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be said today at 3 p.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
