Dr. Andrew Joseph "A.J." Kreller III Obituary
"It is with a sad heart we say goodbye to a wonderful soul...."
Dr. Andrew Joseph "A.J." Kreller, III, age 71 of Mandeville, LA, passed away peacefully June 27, 2016. He was born in New Orleans on January 3, 1945 to the late Dr. Andrew Joseph Kreller, Jr. and the late Florence Theresa Skelly Kreller.
He grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Jesuit High School in 1963. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loyola University New Orleans in 1969 where he was a brother in the social fraternity Sigma Alpha Kappa.
He served 2 years in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and as a dentist on the USS Fulton submarine tender in New London, CT. In 1974 Dr. Kreller completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Ochsner Hospital and practiced in Covington for 40 years, until his retirement in 2011.
Dr. Kreller was a member of the medical staff of St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Lakeview Regional Medical Center, and North Oaks Hospital. Dr. Kreller was also the Chief of Staff at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and a faculty member of LSU Dental School. He was a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and the Northlake Dental Study Club. He was an active community member, serving on the board of Christ Episcopal School and as physician for Covington High School football team.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Bailey Kreller. He is survived by his children Gretchen Kreller Hiley (Patrick), Jeff Kreller, Katie Kreller Tardiff (Darrell), Tim Kreller (Christine), Bryan Kreller (Erica), his stepdaughters Cristy Cone Coleman and Katy Cone. He was preceded in death by his son Scott Kreller. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joseph, Ella and Jude Hiley; Libby and Drew Tardiff; William Coleman; and Susanna, Maggie, and Mark Kreller.
Dr. Kreller was a lover of nature, animals and children. He was an avid cycler, sailor, camper, and backpacked through many of the National Parks as a member of the Sierra Club. He loved reading, gardening, history, music, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was a talented artist and writer. After Hurricane Katrina he collected discarded bikes and restored them to donate to those in need. He was a lifelong rescuer of pets without homes and during his last years volunteered at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on July 5th at 3:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 129 N. New Hampshire St., Covington, followed by a reception at the church.
