Fred Hays was an intelligent, well-educated, and a very handsome young man who began having mental problems in his late twenties or early thirties. He was eventually hospitalized in a state mental institution, where he spent the rest of his life. About ten years before his death a medication was finally found, that helped to relieve his symptoms.
