Robert Ames Hayes met his Savior face to face on Christmas Eve, 2009, and we will miss him every day until we see him again.

He was born to Everett and Evelyn Hayes, in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 16, 1933. Bob met Elsie on her first day of high school in Albuquerque and they married in 1952, celebrating their 57th anniversary four days before his death. Their five children and grandchildren brought much joy to their lives. Upon graduation from UNM, Bob served as a Naval Officer for two years on the USS Philippine Sea and two years in Naples, Italy. He and his family lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for five years, where he held the position of Student Affairs Grantee for the USIA. After earning his Ph.D. at University of New Mexico, he joined the History Department at Texas Tech University, where he taught for 30 years, retiring in 1998 with the rank of Professor Emeritus. Bob and Elsie moved to Dallas in 2001 and to Richardson in 2006. They traveled to many places around the world, often in the company of dear friends and family. Anyone who knew Bob can recite a joke or funny story he told and laugh when they tell it. Bob was an adored son, brother, husband, father, teacher, spiritual leader, friend, best man, grandpa, scholar and hero. In his final years, Bob fought Parkinson's Disease with dignity at home thanks to the wonderful care of his wife, Elsie, and his nurse/caregiver, Marc Nagel.

Left to cherish his memories are his best friend, high school sweetheart and beloved wife, Elsie; sister, Beverlee (Ivan) Cannon of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Randy (Elzi) Hayes of Richardson; daughter, Linda (Jim) Schoendienst of Plano; daughter, Susan Archer (Mike) McGary of Richardson; son, Ron (Paula) Hayes of Plano; daughter, Lois (Joseph) Harker of Lucas; devoted caregiver, Marc Nagel; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; an aunt who was like a sister, cousins, nieces, nephews and other much-loved relatives and friends in numerous locations.

There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 at 10 a.m. at The Harvest Church, 700 Rivercrest Blvd., in Allen, Texas. He will be interred at DFW VA National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. the same day.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Africa Ministry Project, 4910 17th, Lubbock, TX 79416.

We are comforted that Bob knew Christ and that we will see him again.
