Calvin Hayes, the commission merchant Monday received a sentence of two years in the penitentiary. He will take an appeal to the Supreme court.
When sentenced [typo] was pronounced, Hayes was accorded the customary privilege of telling what he had to say. In a rather strong language, he denounced his conviction as an outrage.
"It is an outrage," he declared, "to punish me under this accusation. I am not guilty. I have been doing business with the merchants here for twelve years and no one is able to say that I have not acted squarely."
Judge Hazen sentenced him to two years in the penitentiary. Eugene Hayes a son of the conicted [typo]man will be tried at the next term of court on a similar charge.
