Obituary Published in The Times-Picayune from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, 2021
Geraldine "Gerry" Gervais Silbernagel, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2021 at the age of 86. She is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, born on February 7, 1934 to the late Josephine Dennis Gervais and Eldridge J. Gervais. Gerry is the beloved wife of Joseph Frederick Silbernagel; cherished mother of Joseph Silbernagel (Celeste), Sandra Hughes (Tommy), Geri Ann Weaver (Joe), Dennis Silbernagel (Kathy), Dawn Taylor (Bruce), and Mary Hankosky (Scott); loving grandmother of Joey Silbernagel (Kristy), Amy Silbernagel Hilsher (Darwyn), Katie Silbernagel Varino (Joey), Tommy Hughes IV (Lori), Lisa Hughes Lapeze (Jason), Tiffany Weaver Brauner (Kris), Denny Silbernagel, Dustin Silbernagel, Kayla Silbernagel, Zachary Taylor, Alex Taylor, Anna Hankosky, Elizabeth Hankosky, and the late Joseph Samuel Weaver II; and caring sister of Gail Schiel (Melvin). She also leaves behind twenty-four great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of these she loved dearly and touched deeply.
Proceeded in death by mother-in-law, Caroline Donnow Silbernagel; father-in-law, Louis Jacob Silbernagel; brother-in-law, Louis Leonard Silbernagel; and sister-in-law, Brenda Silbernagel Hingle.
She eloped and married the love of her life, Joseph "the boy next door", 69 years ago on January 29, 1952. After Joseph's time in the Army, they returned home to New Orleans where they raised their family and moved to Slidell in 1983. Together they created many beautiful memories that will be forever cherished. Many of these memories included their love for music and dancing. We are sure she will be waiting for her dance partner at the Pearly Gates. Gerry was a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Slidell, where she served on the Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society and was a St. Joseph's Altar volunteer. She was also an active member of the Magnolia Homemakers and the New Orleans Fireman's Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Gerry was a fabulous cook. She enjoyed cooking for her family, friends, and anyone that stopped by. She always made sure there was enough for company. As a devoted mother and grandmother, Gerry rarely missed a school event, dance recital, birthday, or any special milestone in her loved ones' lives. She was always there to show her love and support. She also enjoyed shopping and playing Pokeno and Cootie with her lady friends, as well as going to the casino. Gerry held her faith, her family, and the rosary close at heart, always putting others before herself. She will be missed by all.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church located at 400 Westchester Place in Slidell, LA.
