Orion Richardson Anthon

Cherished husband, father, grandfather and great-grand-father, Orion Richardson Anthon passed away at home in Springfield, Louisiana on Monday morning, January 13, 2014. He was 97 years old, born August 26, 1916. Orion was the embodiment of America's Greatest Generation and the stoic, caring patriarch of his family. The younger of two children, Carrie Trescott Anthon and Orion Anthon, he was born and raised in Hammond, Louisiana by parents Alfred and Ada Anthon along with loving grandparents, Ludwig Christian Anthon and Carrie Anthon, all who took part in the family dairy business.
As a teenager, following the Great Depression,Orion worked and resided with a favorite uncle in Wisconsin, fine-tuning his agricultural and farming skills. Eventually, he was married to Evelyn Wendt, a daughter of the neighborhood farming community. Blissful matrimony was interrupted almost immediately as Orion was called to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in the European and North African theatres as a medic surgical technician with the 348th Station Hospital Unit in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. In later years he would tell many memorable, heart- wrenching stories of time spent in German hospitals tending brave, wounded soldiers brought from the battlefields. After performing his patriotic duties during world War II, he was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946.
During the next sixty-seven years, he resumed his married life, purchased his first farm in Rio, Wisconsin, and experienced the births of four children. Eventually he and the family of six moved back to Hammond working with the L.C. Anthon water well business: the beginning of an occupation that he pursued most of his life. Settling in Livingston Parish, he was a devoted family man and talented craftsman being well-known for his charitable acts and servant's heart for family, friends and neighbors. Orion had an avid interest in all facets of life such as raising cattle in order to have "home grown" milk, planting and tending over two hundred fruit trees in his backyard and becoming a beekeeper in order to produce many gallons of honey annually for the purpose of sharing with the entire neighborhood.
After Evelyn's death from cancer, Orion married Dorothy Richardson Walls. Together, they continued his traveling interests - Egypt, Israel, Alaska, etc. along with his many other hobbies, Dorothy being a willing, talented, enthusiastic companion.
Orion is survived by Dorothy Anthon, his wife of thirty-seven years, his four children: Marjorie, Lois, Marilyn and Ludwig, their spouses, children and grandchildren. He is also survived by seven stepchildren: Bonnie, Bobby, Chuck, Faye, Kenny, Kathy, Terri, and their spouses, children and grandchildren. Orion was an active member of the Blood River Church of God and servant of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-three years, Evelyn Wendt Anthon and his sister Carrie Anthon Brown.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM. until 9:00 PM at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Visitation will resume at Blood River Church of God, Wednesday morning, January 15, 2014 from 8:00 AM until funeral services begin at 10:00 AM . with Rev.
