He was a teacher by profession and organized a small school among his nieces and nephews and a few of the neighbors soon after his arrival in this country. He and his cousin Bryan Durnin in Kansas City, Mo., shared an interest in complicated mathematical problems, which they invented and proposed to each other for solution via letters. Henry and his cousin could easily switch between English and Gaelic, showing a fluency in the Gaelic.
He kept a journal of the family's voyage from Liverpool to New Orleans in 1849 aboard the Bark Confidence.
He was an historian.
