Per Newspaper article sent to me by O. J. Diettel,
Consolidation with New Orleans brought increasing settlement, with large numbers of German and Irish immigrants settling the area. Established by Archbishop Blank in 1851, St. John the Baptist Church, 1139 Dryades, is a tribute to the Irish and German Catholics of the area. Designed by Albert Diettel, and constructed by Thomas Muilligan from 1869 to 1872, at a cost of $150,000, it is reminiscent of Baroque churches in Germany. The original frame church of St. Mary's Assumption from the Irish Channel was moved to the historic St. Joseph Cemetery on Washington Avenue in 1869 when construction on the present St. Mary's Assumption began. This frame building dates from 1844.
Dryades Street was a very important market area at this time. The old market building still stands at Dryades and Melpomene Streets. Before the streetcars made Canal Street more accessible to shoppers, the Dryades Street Market was one of the largest and busiest in the city. The market is one of the very few still remaining in the city.

Per Newspaper article sent to me by O. J. Diettel,
DIETTEL (DIETIEL)ALBERT, Architect. The Labrot Collection, Tulane University, contains plans by A, Diettel & Son of: (1) a house, 190 Canal, ca. 1830-1860; (2) a store at 102 Camp, ca. 1830-1860; (3) store and office, 48 Camp, ca. 1880's; (4) store at 300 Camp. ca. 1880's; (5) store at 115 Poydras, ca. 1830-1860; and (6) store, corner 61 Camp and Commercial Alley, ca. 1880's. Diettel (Dietiel)was the architect of the Washington Artillery Arsenal on St. Charles, near Julia Street, (1872). In 1900, the Rex (carnival)balls were given in the second-floor ballroom of this three-story structure. Picayune Guide to New Orleans, p. 156. In 1869-1872 his church of St. John the Baptist was constructed; with its Baroque towers, it is "one of the finest brick structures in New Orleans," according to Samuel Wilson Jr., Guide in the Architecture of New Orleans, 1695-1959, p. 43.

Research:
Per Otto Diettel 5/8/2005 in an email answering my guess that Hans Author Diettel might be son of Annie and Bernard Diettel -
Yes, Hans Author was the son of Annie and Bernard Diettel. You won't find him or his brothers Ernest or Frank Diettel in the New Orleans birth records because they were born in Saxony Germany. Bernard and Annie returned to Germany doing the Civil War with Albert and Rudolph. I guess he did not have a lot to do while in Germany, so they had three kids. Rose and Eliza were born in New Orleans after the Civil War to round out the bunch to seven. My father and I were named after Rose's husban, Otto Graf. There is not much to be found about Ernest because he spent most of his adult life in Jackson, La., the state mental hospital.
