Smoldering Dump Fires Two trucks
Firemen were dispatched to one fire at the Agriculture st. dump about 11 a. m. Thursday and while fighting the blaze a second fire came to them.
Eighth precinct police said firefighting apparatus was summoned when a city sanitation truck, driven by Ernest Diettel, 52, 2823 St. Thomas, caught fire after dumping a load of trash. Police said meanwhile, a second city sanitation truck, driven by Bobbie Maurer, 23, 1023 Louisiana, caught fire in another part of the dump.
Spotting the blaze and the fire engines about the same time police said, Maurer quickly sped to the scene of the first fire for help. Police said the first truck was heavily damaged, while the truck driven by Maurer received only minor damage.
The vehicles caught fire while dumping loads on the smoldering dump, according to police.
