ARTHELIA LUCILLE STIEFFEL SNYDER
was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 21, 1907, and died in The Woodlands, Texas on October 12, 2002 at the age of 94 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emile Laurent Stieffel and Arthelia Jane Fayard Stieffel; her husband, Edward Martin Snyder, Jr. and her daughter, Professor Sandra Snyder Mondin; her four brothers: Alton, Fayard, and Ray of natural causes; and Lt. James Stieffel during combat in WWII in the Philippines. Arthelia graduated from Soulé Business College in New Orleans completing the coursework in the shortest time ever recorded by a student. Arthelia then worked for the Southern Cotton Oil Company and the F.B.I. She and her husband moved from New Orleans to Houston in 1945 and were among the founding families of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where Arthelia was active in the Altar Society and the St. Rose School. She also served as an officer in the Mothers' Club of St. Pius X High School. In addition, Arthelia was an avid bridge player scoring well in local, regional and national tournaments and was a Life Master a ranking that she was proud of stating that she had earned and had not bought through playing with a professional. In Houston, among other jobs, she worked for the County Clerk's office during elections well into her eighties. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jane Snyder Robeau and Richard Mark Robeau of San Antonio, Texas; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard John Snyder and Judith Phillip Snyder of Montgomery, Texas; 6 grandchildren - Jeffrey and Gavin DeCuir and Corinne, Robin, Martin, and Evan Snyder; and nieces Annamae Stieffel Silbernagel and Catherine Nell Stieffel Bourgeois of Metairie, Louisiana, plus many other nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services for Arthelia will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Arthelia's memory to St. Pius X High School, 811 Donovan, Houston, Texas 77091

Of interest among the later September weddings was that of Miss Arthelia Lucille Stieffel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emile Laurant Stieffel, to Mr. Edward Martin Snyder, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Snyder of this city, celebrated Saturday morning last at the Sacred Heart of Jesus church on Canal street with the Rev. G. J. McNamara officiating. The bride was given away by her father and wore a pretty gown of ivory-colored satib on princess' line, with a tulle veil held to a cap of real lace.
The attendants on the bride were Mrs. Walter D. Stella, Jr., as matron of honor, Misses Altha Schulz, Dorothy Walsh and Mercedes Ledet as bridesmaids. The best man was Mr. Harold Rauch, the groomsmen were Messrs. James Stieffel, Martin Klein and Leonard Johnson. The ushers were Messrs. Lloyd Bouchon and Leo Leach.
A reception followed the ceremony at the home of the bride's parents on Jefferson Davis Parkway. Mrs. Stieffel was assisted in receiving by the bridegroom's mother, Mrs. Edward Martin Snyder, and members of the bridal party.
The young couple will be at home in New Orleans at 6023 Colbert street.
