CLOTHES AND TOYS are what these children of Hope Haven, Madonna Manor and Chinchuba Institue for the Deaf in Marrero received from Santa Claus Friday. The occasion was the annual Christmas party given by employees of Avondale Shipyards Inc. and the Avondale Lions Club for the boys and girls. This year, more than 290 received presents. Mrs. Anna Silbernagle was in charge of the contribution program among Avondale employees.

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES TO HONOR 7 ACHIEVERS
Seven people will be honored today at a Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services luncheon in the Westin Canal Place, 100 Iberville St.

Those to be honored as Goodwill Achievers at the fund-raising luncheon are Carla Exposito, Katherine Pharr Gage, Dan L. Gilbert, Ray S. Parks Jr., Annamae S. Silbernagel, John F. Strain and Enez Watson. Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana sponsors and supports a number of projects and training programs for disabled people.

Exposito, a vocational evaluator at Goodwill Industries and a vice president of the Louisiana Chapter of the National Ataxia Foundation, has Friedrich's ataxia, a hereditary genetic defect that affects coordination, balance and muscle strength. She has a degree in rehabilitative counseling from LSU.

Gage has been crippled since she contracted polio at age 15. A year later she was able to walk at her graduation from Louise McGehee School. She earned degrees at Newcomb College and Loyola University and has taught at McGehee for the past 27 years.

Gilbert, who contracted polio as an infant, earned a degree in communications from the University of Southern Mississippi. He first worked as a radio newsman. He earned a law degree at Tulane University in 1985 and has a law practice.

Parks, deaf since birth, graduated from Gallaudet University with a bachelor of science degree in physics and received a master's in science teaching from American University. He is director of the Performing Arts Program at the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge.

Silbernagel, who is administrative assistant to Albert L. Bossier Jr., chairman and chief executive officer at Avondale Industries Inc., contracted polio at age 4. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and attended college at Hanford, Wash.

Strain, legally blind since birth, first attended a special school in Kansas, then attended elementary and high schools for sighted students. He earned a bachelor's degree from Southwest Baptist University and a master of divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the director of a depression and anxiety treatment program at CPC Coliseum Center.

Watson, disabled by polio while in her teens, completed high school while hospitalized. She learned bookkeeping and machine operations and earned an associate degree in business at Delgado Community College. Although she is a paraplegic, she is active in community activities and has a 13-year-old son.

Tickets for the luncheon are $30 and are available by calling 888-2789. A cash bar opens at 11 a.m. and the program begins at noon.

Anna Mae Silbernagel is the Mothers March Chairman for Jefferson Parish.
Last year, the march raised more than $90,000 for the Greater New Orleans Regional Chapter.

Annamae Stieffel Silbernagel passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 in Conroe, TX. She was a native of New Orleans, LA and a longtime resident of New Orleans and Metairie, LA. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Louis Silbernagel. Mrs. Silbernagel is survived by numerous half-brothers, half-sisters, nieces and nephews.
She was a retired executive assistant for Avondale Shipyard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., near Clearview Pkwy., in Metairie, LA on Friday, March 15, 2013 form 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM followed by a graveside service and interment at Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, LA at 12:00 noon.
