FERRIL A. ST. PIERRE SR., A VETERAN FIREFIGHTER
Ferril A. St. Pierre Sr., fire chief and business manager for the Bridge City Volunteer Fire Co., died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 60.

Mr. St. Pierre was born in Mathers and lived in Bridge City for the past 55 years. He joined the fire department there in 1960 and was elected chief in 1970.

A 1956 graduate of West Jefferson High School, Mr. St. Pierre worked in the shipfitting and fire departments at Avondale Shipyards and as an instructor at the Jefferson Parish Fire and Training Center before devoting his full time to the fire chief's job in Bridge City.

"That fire department was just his life," said his wife, Carolyn Tassin St. Pierre. "He absolutely loved it."

The passion is shared by many members of Mr. St. Pierre's family. His father, brother, a son, a brother-in-law and nephews either were or are members of the department, his wife said.

Debbie Greene, Mr. St. Pierre's administrative assistant for 14 years, said he was well-respected. "He was knowledgeable, strong-willed and got the job done," she said.

Mr. St. Pierre was a former Army cryptographer and member of the Louisiana National Guard.

He was named the outstanding fireman in the state in 1995 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also received many service awards, including three from the Bridge City Civic Association, two from state fire associations and two from Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Church.

He was a past president of the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association and the West Bank Presidents and Chiefs Association, a past board member of the Louisiana Firemen's Association, a past secretary of the 7th District Fire Board, and a member of the International Fire Chiefs Association and National Fire Protection Association.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Rene and Ferril St. Pierre Jr.; two daughters, Allison St. Pierre Prendergast and Michelle St. Pierre Hanning; his mother, Melina Rivet St. Pierre; a brother, Gable St. Pierre; three sisters, Grace Guillot, Frances Wells and Mary Jane Maury; and three grandchildren.

A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 a.m. at Westside Funeral Home, 5101 West Bank Expressway, Marrero. Burial will be in Restlawn Park in Avondale.
