Obituary of Murphy Edward Richardson
Murphy E. Richardson , 93, died peacefully at home Monday, July 12, 2010. He grew up on a farm in Springfield and later made Baton Rouge his home. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1936, he joined the Army in lieu of accepting a basketball scholarship at LSU. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., where he was soon promoted to corporal, Company D, 29th Infantry. In 1942, he re-enlisted to serve in World War II and fought in the South Pacific. He received the Combat Infantryman's Badge Award and honorable discharge as sergeant in the 169th Infantry in 1944 and was noted as "a trustworthy man of excellent character." One of his many duties was to deliver the news from the rear to the front lines "verbatim."
Murphy was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish for more than 60 years. He worked at Dupont/Ethyl/Albamarle for 40 years and enjoyed almost 30 years of retirement which he devoted to his family, friends, gardening and woodworking. Murphy was proud to say that he had one wife, one family, one house, and one job. All who knew Murphy loved him and his wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie Rosa Mae Poché Richardson ; six children and their spouses, Michael and Nancy Shaw Richardson , of Holden, Katheleen and Daryl Mark Hubbs. of Rowlett, Texas, Margaret Richardson Sanz, Dr. Daniel and Mrs. Bonnie Baker Richardson , Doug and Cathi Trahan Richardson , all of Baton Rouge, Rose and Dr. Sid DeRouen, of New Iberia; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Alberta "Birdie" Hodges Richardson , of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Singletary and Jennie Paul Richardson ; two brothers, Phillip and Llewellyn Richardson ; seven sisters, Gladys Treece, Virgina Ada Anzalone, Esther Richardson , Laura May Downing, Velma Kennedy, and Jessie McKigney; and three half sisters, Lasca Bankston, Edith Bankston, and Lois Kennedy.
Pallbearers will be Daryle, David, Judah, Ethan, Taylor and Austin Richardson , Blake Sanz and Brother Martin Mary (Derek Hubbs). Honorary pallbearers are Murphy , Ike, Edmond, Paul, Ronnie, and Kemp Richardson . Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, July 13, was from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting will resume on Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 2250 Main St., from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Carter Plantation Cemetery, Springfield.
