MILLSBORO - Elza Marques Guard of Millsboro died Friday, March 31, 2000, in her home.
Mrs. Guard was a concert pianist as well as a loving wife and devoted mother. She received her degree in piano from Indiana University.
She was the Gold Medal Winner at the Conservatorio da Musica, Rio de Janeiro, coming to this country to represent Brazilian and Latin American music. She also was a protégé of Guiomar Novaes.
In addition to concertizing in Brazil and the United States, she taught privately in New Mexico, Kentucky and Maryland. Throughout her career she gave lecture recitals and master classes at music schools and professional conferences.
She was very active in and president of the Friday Morning Music Club, a member of the Montgomery County, Md., Music Teachers Association, and the Maryland State Music Teachers Association.
The Guard family came to Rehoboth Beach each summer for more than 40 years. Mrs. Guard, with her husband of 56 years, Bailey Guard, former U.S. Senate staffer, retired to Delaware in 1998.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Jacyrn Guard of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gloria Guard of Philadelphia; a son, John David Guard of West Hollywood, Calif.; three grandchildren, Julia Mahoney, Gregory and Jessica Natali; and a great granddaughter, Jasmine.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edmonds Catholic Church, King Charles & Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach. Burial will be private. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: People's Emergency Center, 325 North 39th St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-4656.
