HELPING OUT AREA VETERANS FULL-TIME JOB DURING HOLIDAYS
Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - Sunday, December 26, 1993
Author: FRANCES PERNICIARO Contributing writer
Merlin Lehmann has dedicated the past 40 years of his life to helping people and his community.

He can be found most days working around his parish church, St. Francis Xavier on Metairie Road, performing such tasks as preparing the altar for 8 a.m. weekday morning Mass, cleaning the altar and replacing church candles.

But Lehmann 's volunteer work does not stop there. As an active member and chaplain of the American Legion Post 175 and VFW Post 6640, one of Lehmann 's main tasks is to organize wakes and funerals for fellow war veterans.

Several years ago, Lehmann was awarded the Holy Name Society's Rummel Medal for his work as a former secretary and treasurer of the Archdiocesan Union of Holy Name Societies, the group's highest honor.

"I am just thankful to God and for all of the graces I've received," said Lehmann , 80.

With the holidays in full swing, Lehmann and his wife, Dorothy, do the party rounds at area nursing homes and hospitals, bringing the spirit of the season wherever they go.

"December is a special time for us," Lehmann said. "This is our way of showing the patients at Veterans Hospital that we appreciate what they did for this country. The refreshments that we provide are a small token of this appreciation. I think I feel best when I do things like this."

Walden Health Care Center in Kenner and New Orleans Home and Rehabilitation Center in New Orleans are regular stops for Lehmann and other Post members.

"Being at home for the holidays with my family brings me so much joy," Lehmann said. "If I am able to give a little of myself to people in nursing homes and hospitals, then I understand and know what the Christmas spirit is all about."
