OBITUARY
Sarah Frances Hayes was born near Columbus, Indiana, Nov. 28, 1838, and departed this life at Dunavant, Kansas, March 7, 1930, at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 10 days.
She was the daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth Cox Hayes and a great-granddaughter of Captain Joseph Hayes of the Revolutionary war. She was a pioneer teacher, having taught for a few. years in the district schools of Indiana.
She was .united in marriage to John B. Sherwood. Feb. 13, 1861. Six children were born into the home, three of whom and the husband have preceded her in death. Surviving are Elizabeth and John W., of the home; Samuel P., of Lancaster, California ; seven grandchildren and one great-grand child.
Since coming to Kansas in April, 1886, the family has lived in Jefferson county and have spent 34 years on the farm where she passed away.
Mother Sherwood was a landmark in this community. She possessed a clear mind, which continued with her to the end. Outside her family a host of neighbors and friends will miss the hearty welcome she gave to all her callers. Her clear mind and ready sympathy and love will be greatly missed in the community. During the years when called upon by her pastor and friend she readily accepted the Master as her friend and redeemer-and has gone to be with Him.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Francis Buck, were held at 2 p. m. Sunday in the Dunavant church. Her body rests in Spring Grove cemetery.
