Didn't Like 'Wilbur' So He Almost Misses Reunion With His Sister
Because he though his first given name of Wilbur sounded "sissified," Jack Holiday Wednesday almost missed a reunion here with a sister whom he hadn't seen in 38 years.
Holiday, 54, 5428 Baccich, told the story this way:
His sister, Ms. Harriett Wilson, Lyndhurst, N. J., heard his son, Stanley Holiday, speaking on a broadcast during the January 1 Sugar Bowl football classic. That convinced her that her brother was living in New Orleans.
So Mrs. Wilson and her husband, William J. Wilson, a heating contractor, stopped by New Orleans Monday on a return trip home from a convention in Phoenix, Ariz. But she ran into complications when she tried to locate Holiday.
"When we got here." she said, " I looked in the telephone book for Wilbur Holiday. Bu I could not find it and called Stanley's residence and asked for Wilbur, and they told me they didn't know him."
Holiday said when his sister called his son's residence, his son's brother-in-law answered the telephone and " he didn't know my real name." However, Mrs. Wilson scanned the city directory and found Mrs. Jack Holiday's given name, which she recognized.
She called Stanley's residence again and "we got everthing straightened out," she said. "The last letter I received from Wilbur - or Jack - was in 1922, and I did not know what happened to him."
Said Jack Holiday: "Wilbur is a sissy name. I've always hated it. Sissies in the funny papers are always named Wilbur and so were a lot of sissies I knew when I was a kid."
