Retirement Ended As Fireman Dies; Stephen Hayes, 75
Stephen Hayes. who started a career as city fireman by teamstering Co. 13's horsedrawn brigade and retired 39 years later, in 1948, driving a big pumper for Engine Co. 29. died yesterday at his home, 3510 Mozart Ave, Cheviot. Mr. Hayes, who was 75 years old, had been suffering from a coronary ailment.
A native Cincinnatian, he lived at 3018 Montana Ave., Westwood, for many years. Mr. Hayes moved to Cheviot in 1949, after a two-year stay in California.
His memberships included Carson Lodge No. 589, Free and Accepted Masons.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Hine Hayes; two daughters, Mrs. Lenoir Buck, Westwood. and Mrs. Jeanette Ortman, Los Angeles; a brother, Warren Hayes, Webster City, Iowa; five sisters. Miss Katherine Hayes and Mrs. Mary Dick, both of Cloves; Mrs. Cora Mcllenry, Cheviot; Mrs. Minerva Green, Bloomington. Ill., and Mrs. Anna Yancey, Sayler Park, and four grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Hayes will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Neidhard funeral home, Westwood. Cremation will follow.
