Obituary
John Hayes, son of John and Sara Hayes was born in Bedford Township, Meigs County, Ohio, January 7, 1843, and passed away in Columbus, Ohio, November 17, 1923, aged 80 years and 10 months.
In 1873 he united in marriage to Miss Sarah Maria Young who died in 1887, leaving him with seven children, the youngest a tiny babe. He afterwards was married to Miss Anna Hicks, who died in 1907.Some years later he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lydia Matheny, who survives him.
Mr. Hayes was one of the youngest and bravest of the gallant band of Bedford Boys that answered their country's call in 1861, having enlisted in Company H, 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in which he served faithfully for more than three years.
Mr. Hayes was a fine Christian gentleman, a good neighbor, a kind husband and indulgent father and one of it may truly be said, "Life's race well run, life's work well done."
He leaves to mourn their loss two daughters. Mrs. Ellen Roush, Athens; Mrs. Maude Flickenger, Pratt's Fork; and five sons, Claude, Hemlock Grove; Pearl H., Phoenix, Ariz; Emerson, Barton and Ward, Chester; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Goodin, Albany, and Mrs. Hannah Hawk, Chester and one brother, Levi Hayes, Bidwell. He also leaves 23 grandchildren.
A pilgrim old and travel-worn, Laid down his load of care,
And stepped into the stream which flows between the here and there.
An angel reached a kindly hand, and drew him safe to shore;
And now within the soul's bright home.
He's safe forever more.
