Per The Hayes Family Origin, History and Genealogy he graduated from Swarthmore and Harvard Colleges and from the law school of the University of Pennsylvania and he practiced law in his native town. He was a devoted student of history and visited many shrines in the old World. He compiled the history of the Hayes family after the bi-centennial of Henry Hayes' coming to America. in 1905.
