George P. Hayes of Atlanta, a retired chairman of the English department at Agnes Scott College, died of cardiac arrest Thursday at Piedmont Hospital. He was 90.

He did not have a history of heart problems, according to a family member.

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.

Mr. Hayes was chairman of the English department from 1927 until his retirement in 1967. He also taught English at Emory University, Georgia Tech, the University of Florida and Hunter College in New York.

George Passmore Hayes was born Aug. 21, 1897, in West Chester, Pa. He was the third of four children of Jacob C. Hayes , a lawyer, and Mrs. Louella Passmore Hayes . He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I.

The young Mr. Hayes graduated from Swarthmore College in 1918, and received a master's degree from Harvard University in 1920, later earning a Ph.D. in English from Harvard University in 1927.

He was a member of the Modern Language Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Theta, the Harvard Club and St. Philip's Cathedral.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edna Brunner Hayes ; a son, Henry V. Hayes of Pelham, N.Y.; two daughters, Ms. Ellen Hayes of Framingham, Mass., and Mrs. Anne Berry of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to St. Philip's Cathedral.
