"He was drafted during the World War. He was in traning at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, from October to May 29, when he left for the front. he fought in the battles of the Marne, July 14; Argonne Meuse, September 16, and St. Mihiel, September 11, 1918, and was with the Army of Occupation.
He was in Company L, 330 Regiment, 83 Division, and June 20 was transferred as a replacement to Company A, 30 Regiment, 3rd Division. he arrived in the old U.S.A. May 30, 1919. He was wounded and received an honorable discharge.
He kept a diary during his travels by "hob nail express" in the European countries and tells of some harrowing experiences.
When he arrived home the first thing his mother asked after giving him a fond greeting, was, "Are you all right?"
He answered by saying, "My hearing is affected, but I never let anyone know that. I didn't want to be sent to a camp." He had a sweetheart back home. His son, Earl Darby, bears the name of one of his superiors while in the service"
