He enlisted in the services of the Civil War as a private August 29, 1862 and endured the many hardships of the war until he received his discharge as Sargeant June 26, 1865, at Reileigh, N. C. He marched with Sherman to the sea, and served as a body guard to John A. Logan. He also was in the battle of Chatanooga and Chickamauga. He was united in marriage after the war to Roxanna West, and to their union were born eight children. His main occupation was a farmer until his later years, when he organized the first Rural Free Delivery service in Hamilton, Ohio, starting from Cleves and on which her served. He served in the war with Company D of the Fifth Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Cavalry.
