Handwritten account of Joseph Hayes
"He armed and equipped a Company of Cavalry at his own expense: having mortgaged his farm in Chester County Pennsylvania to raise the money, and the land was sold by the sheriff in the year 1785 in foreclosure of the mortgage. He served for a time under General Otho Williams. At the close of the war of the Revolution, being ruined financially in 1791 he with five married children moved to the Miami County, and in 1796 moved around the Miami ??? into the present state of Indiana, where he and his children bought the first land ever sold, by the Government in Indiana. The family became very prominent in their locality."
