Albert Hayes Dead at 86
Was School Board Member, Merchant
Albert Hayes, 86, retired merchant and clerk of the Salem school board for 35 years, died of arteriosclerosis at 12:15 p. m. Sunday at his home, 690 N. Lincoln ave.
Funeral service will be held at 2 Wednesday at the Arbaugh-Pearce funeral home in keeping with the custom of the Wilbur Society of Friends. Burial will be in the Damascus cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening.
A son of C. I. and Deborah Fawcett Hayes, he was born in Salem May 18, 1864, and spent his
life here.
In early life he was engaged in the dry goods business, operating a store at the corner of E. State st and N. Lundy ave, now the Murphy store, which his grandfather started in 1835. Mr. Hayes continued the store after death of his father until 1915, when it was closed out.
He was employed as a shipping clerk by the Silver Mfg. Co. for some years and worked as an accountant for the Ohio Insurance Co. for 18 years prior to his retirement a few years ago.
Interested in the civic activities of the city, he was elected to the Salem board of education April 1, 1899, and was chosen clerk in 1995. He was a member of the Wilbur Society of Friends.
Always a staunch Republican, he was affiliated with the Mark Hanna Republican club in the early days when political enthusiasm ran high.
Mr. Hayes was married to Myra D. Branson of Flushing Aug. 21, 1891. They had spent their married life in their present home.
Surviving besides his wife is one daughter, Lillian R. Hayes of North Conway. N. H., and one son, William Donald at home: one sister, Mrs. Deborah Hayes Conrow of Los Angeles, and one half sister, Mrs. Edith Haines of Westtown. Pa.
