PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS
Paul Havener Passes the State Examination Brilliantly
An examination for the degree of certifed public accountants was held by the Louisiana State Board at Accountants at the office of Mr. Charles E. Wermuth, their secretary, on June 28 and 24.
Mr. Paul Havener, a prominent young accountant associated with Messrs. Robinson & Masquelette, certifed
public accountants, at this city, passed this examination with high honors, the board being unanimously of the opinion that his papers were the best they had ever seen. Mr. Havener is to be highly congratulated on his work. as prior to this date only one party has bee successful in passing these examinations, and the standard set by
the board ranks with New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois. In other words, is second to none in the country. A
successful candidate is require to pass a thorough examination in the theory of accounts, auditing, practical
accounting and commercial law, and the preliminary requirements are a high school education and at least one
year's experience as a practicing accountant.
The Louisiana State Board is composed of Messrs. E. L. Chappuis. Chas. E. Wermuth and Elkin Moses, who are all prominent in their profession.

TRANSPORTATION AND ACCOUNTING CLASSES AT NIGHT
College of Commerce Courses Under Theodore Brent and Paul Havaner.
Two new members of the faculty of the College of' Commerce and Business Administration of Tulane University, whose appointment has just been announced, are Paul Havener, who will teach the night course in accounting, and Theodore Brent, who will teach the night course in transportation. A. number of other practical railroad men will assist Mr. Brent with talks on special subjects in which they are expert.
Mr. Havener is well known, in New Orleans as a member of the accounting firm of Roblnson, Masquelette & Co., and formerly was a student of accounting and other business subjects at the Northwestern University School of Commerce.

The course in accounting is planned to |be useful to business men and to lawiyers. as well as to accountants and to those intending to enter the accounting profession. The essential principles of modern accounting are discussed in detail. The questions asked by the Louisiana State Board of Accountants as well as questions from the C. P. A. examinaitlons of other states are worked and discussed; and the problems and systems of
accounting in typical Southern industries receive special attention. Like all the courses or the college, it is mature in character, and assumes a reasonable knowledge of double entry bookkeeping.

FOUR NAMED TO ATTEND TAXATION CONFERENCE
The president of the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants, Archie M. Smith, has appointed Emile
Bienvenue, Paul Havener and Chas E. Wermuth and Dr. M. A. Aldrich to represent the society at the eleventh
annual conference on taxation to be held at Atlanta, Georgia, Nov. 13-16 under the auspices of the National Tax
Association. Dr. Aldrich is an honorary member of the Louisiana Society.
The object of the conference is to promote the active and intelligent discussion of the pressing questions connected with the levy and collection of federal, state and local taxes.
The official personnel of the conference is composed of delegates appointed by Governors of States, by
Universities and Colleges. and by the state associations of certified public accountants.
Governor Pleasant has named some representative business men as delegates from the state and with the addition of the above mentioned men Louisiana's representation at this important conference will be up to the
highest standard.

SUMMONED TO ANSWER CHARGE OF CONTEMPT
On a report of Deputy Sheriif Samuel Burke, who attempted to serve him with a summons for jury service last
Saturday, Paul Havener, expert accountant, has been summoned before Judge Baker, Friday, in contempt
proceedings. Mr. Havener failed to put in an appearance Monday.
Deputy Sheriff Burke visited Mr. Havener's office Saturday, and is said to have made personal service on Mr.
Havener, whom he met in the elevator in the Whitney Building. It is alleged that Mr. Havener refused point-blank to answer the court summons.

Asks To Be Publishers' Expert In Income Tax Bureau
A high honor came to Paul Havener, member of the accounting of Robinson, Havener & Co., Friday when he was earnestly invited to accept a position in the income tax bureau of the internal revenue department at Washington as an expert of the American Newspaper Publishers.
The telegram came from George McAneny, treasurer of the New York Times, who with Emile M. Schulz, publisher of the New York Evening Post, had been asked to make the selection. The appointment will be made by Commissioner Roper. Robert Ewing, publisher of The States, suggested Mr. Havener, and the New York publishers thoroughly investigated his qualifications.
Mr. Havener will accept the invitation, not for its emoluments but because he feels that in this way he may render important service to the government. At the request of Mr. McAneny he will go to Washington next week for a conference.
Mr. Havener is a Virginian by birth and has been in New Orleans for ten years. He was educated at the university at Valparaiso, Ind. and for one year taught in the Tulane School of Commerce.
His firm is one of the largest and most important in the South and handles the books of many large corporations. It has a representative now filling an engagement at Lima, Peru, evidence of its reputation in its field.

N. O. Accountant Will Help Commissioner Roper Handle Uncle Sam's Money
Paul Havener, of the firm of Robinson, Havener & Co., certified public accountants, has been appointed advisory accountant to Commissioner Daniel Roper, of the Internal Revenue department, and will leave next Tuesday for Washington. Mr. Havener is one of the most efficient accountants in the country and was offered the position several days ago. Friday morning he received a telegram asking him to come next week.
Income and excess profit tax returns from all sections of the country have been sent to headquarters at Washington and Commissioner Roper found it necessary to appoint several expert accountants to handle the tax returns. Mr. Havener is the only man from the South to be appointed.
The firm of Robinson, Havener & Co., is one of the largest in the South. Its business extends to Central and South America. Mr. Havener said Friday he expected to be away from three to six months and that during his absence the New Orleans business will continue as usual.

ACCOUNTANT ACCEPTS GOVERNMENT PLACE
Paul Havener of the New Orleans accounting firm, Robinson, Havener & Co., left for Washington Friday night to establish headquarters for his work in preparing income tax returns of 2491 newspapers. He will work with the Income Tax Bureau and was recommended for the work by the American Newspaper
Publishers' Association.
The task which Mr. Havener has been called to perform is one of unusual importance. and which he is regarded as well qualified to fill. In the work of handling the income tax and excess profit returns of the various newspapers throughout the country. the Income Tax Bureau found, the newspapers making returns on a great variety of standards. Mr. Havener announced before leaving New Orleans for Washington he would
"measure all newspapers by the same yardstick."
At the meeting of the publishers' association in New York last week the question of obtaining an expert accountant to handle this work was brought up. George McAneny, treasurer of the New York Times, and Emile M. Scholz, publisher of the New York Evening Post were authorized to select a man for the place. Mr. Havener was recommended by New Orleans newspaper publishers, and Friday received a telegram from Mr. McAneny requested him to accept the appointment.
Mr. Havener has been a resident of New Orleans ten years, and has assisted in developing the Tulane College of Commerce. He is a native of Virginia. His firm is one of the largest accounting firms in the country, operating both in the United States and Latin America.

One of South's Leading Accountants Dies After Brief Illness
Paul Havener, member of the firm of Robinson, Havener & Co., one off the best known public accountants in
the South, will be buried Wednesday from his late residence, 6010 St. Charles avenue.
Mr. Banner was a victim of influenza which turned into double pneumonia. He died at 4:15 Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Havener was born in Marion, Va. He took a degree of Bachelor of Science at Valparaiso University in
Indiana and subsequently a course at the Northwestern University in Chicago. He settled in New Orleans more
than ten years ago, and became a leader in his profession. For a year he taught in Tulane School of Commerce. The work of his firm extended all over the South and into Central and South America.
Mr. Havener was auditor or The Item, The States and Shreveport Times, and some months ago, was invited by Commission Roper, of the Department of lnternal Revenue, on the recommendation of the American
Newspaper Publishers Association to take a position at Washington in connection with the working out of income tax problems. He returned to the city recently.
He married Miss Anna Vaccaro, daughter of Joseph Vaccaro, who survives him. His mother also survives,
living in Richmond. Va.

Paul Havener, Public Accountant, Is Dead
Paul Havener, 34, of 1516 Robert street, widely known certified public accountant of New Orleans with offices in suite 623, Whitney-Central building, died Tuesday of influenza. Mr. Havener was born in Marion, Va. He was graduated from Valparaiso University and Northwestern University.
His widow, Mrs. Anna Vaccaro Havener, survives, as do his mother, Mrs. Eleanor Havener, of Richmond, Va., and an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Abell, of New River, Va.

The New Orleans Lodge of Elks will hold its annual memorial exercises for members of the lodge who died during the year, on Sunday, December 1, the Athenaeum. Double Wedding Arranged for Daughters of Vaccaro
Filomena to Become Mrs. Dantoni and Anna, Mrs. Havener
Miss Filomena Vaccaro and Miss Anna Vaccaro, daughters of Joseph Vaccaro, of Vaccaro Brothers and company, steamship men, are to be brides at a double wedding in St. Mary's church within the next two days. Miss Filomena Vaccaro will become Mrs. Vincent A. Dantoni and Miss Anna Vaccaro will be Mrs. Paul Havener.
Licenses were taken out just before noon Thursday at city hall. Monzo Woodville and Felix Vaccaro accompanied the prospective Bridegrooms and signed the licenses.
"The wedding is to be particularly private," one of the Vaccaro brothers announced over the telephone just before the Item's first edition goes to press. "We don't care to make any public announcement and, in as much as the father of the sisters is out of town, none of the other relatives care to specify exactly when the wedding will take place."
