Rachel is believed to be the daughter of Nancy and Isaac Harrell. She married James D. Long about 1853 and they had eight children: Edmond, William, Omri (Omari), Erasmus, Mary, Sarah, James and Nettie.

When the wife of son Omri died following childbirth, Rachel and James Long adopted the newborn grandchild into their household and raised him to manhood.
