Dr. James L. Hagen , Jr. died peacefully in his sleep at his daughter's home in Destrehan on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the age of 80. He was born February 19, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana to James L. Hagen and Josie Louise Bourgeois Hagen .

Dr. Hagen is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joyce Salzer Hagen ; their children: Natalie Elaine Richard, Jan Catherine Hagen -Buras, and Charles Werner Hagen ; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchild-ren; and his sister, Marie Vega.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dr. Werner J. Hagen and his sister, Patricia LaMartinere.

Dr. Hagen was educated at St. Aloysius High School, Loyola University, and graduated from the New Orleans School of Dentistry in 1958.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake, Knights of Columbus Council 9240, in Mandeville since 1994. While a member of the Knights of Columbus he achieved many levels of success, including Grand Knight, and received multiple awards and recognitions for his dedicated service. Dr. Hagen was a member of the American Dental Association where he held many positions, and was the past President of New Orleans Acrobatics. He was a past member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Our Lady of the Lake Parish for five years; past member of the Covington Food Bank, and served as Director of the medical and dental complex, and for three years, drove once a month to Birmingham, Alabama to pick up donated health and beauty aids for distribution to the needy at the Covington Food Bank and Samaritan Center.

Dr. Hagen proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1949-1952, receiving multiple campaign ribbons and battle stars. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, stationed in Kangnung and Seoul from 1951-1952, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Liturgy of the Word at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pont-chartrain Blvd. in New Orleans. A Memorial Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
