LIGHTED FIRE WITH COAL OIL; WOMAN IS BURNED TO DEATH
_______________
Mrs. Charles Walter, Formerly of New Orleans, Meets Tragic End.
_______________
FRIENDS COULDN'T SAVE HER
_______________
COVINGTON, La., Sept. 17.-Mrs Chas. Walter, of 1218 Thirteenth avenue, this city, was burned to death in her home yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Walter went to the kitchen to kindle a fire in the stove. There were some live coals under the charred embers, and when she took the coal oil can to oil the wood in the stove, there was a flash and the can exploded, throwing fire in every direction and setting her clothing ablaze from head to foot. She screamed and ran into the house and back again, fanning the flames into a fury. There were in the house with Mrs. Walter at the time her sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Huff and Mrs. C. J. Rathe [Rathke] and Miss Mary Howell, with whom she had been talking while she started the fire.
While Mrs. Huff and Mrs. Rathe searched for blankets with which to smother the flames, Miss Howell followed Mrs. Walter and with her hands tried to beat out and tear off the burning clothing, but before any real assistance could be rendered Mrs. Walter was burned from head to foot. All her clothes were burned off, and the whole surface of the body burned to a crisp.
Physicians were summoned, but they could only give her opiates to ease her suffering until death came.
Mrs. Walter was the wife of C. F. Walter, who lives at 717 Robert street, New Orleans, and had been a resident of this place for quite a while.
The remains were carried to New Orleans for interment.
