Per Obituary in the Dearborn County Register 8/18/1892
Death of Timothy Guard
Died, in this city, on Sunday, August 14th, 1892, Timothy Guard, Sr. aged eighty years.
Mr. Guard was a native of this county, and has always resided within the vicinity of Lawrenceburgh. His father, Alexander Guard, and family removed to this county in 1796 from North Bend, Ohio, having emigrated originally from New Jersey. He landed at North Bend in 1790, and was followed the next year by Capt. Joseph Hayes, a revolutionary soldier. The Hayes and Guard families settled on this side of the Miami River in the valley known as the Big Bottoms.
This is regarded as the first settlement in the county of Dearborn. Mr. Hayes and Mr. Guard each raised large families, most all of whom remained in this neighborhood, and they, also, were blessed with numerous children, until to this day the name and descendants may be counted by scores, and many of them are engaged in cultivating fields in the valley their sires discovered.
Timothy Guard was the eldest son and he was the last of the third generation to pass away. For a number of years he had resided with his son, Daniel M. Guard, in this city, and for months before his death his strong constitution was gradually wasted by disease.
He was married to Rebecca S. Hayes in 1837, who died May 10th, 1876. To them were born 9 children, 7 sons and 2 daughters. Three sons survive him, Daniel M., Hiram and Timothy Guard. There were 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was the only survivor of the third generation of three brothers who first settled the Miami Valley. He was a member of the official board of Belleview Church and was a Trustee when it was built.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at the Belleview Methodist Church. The services were conducted by Revs. Dolph and Iliff. The attendance at the funeral was marked by the many old citizens present.
