Jennison Guard, son of Curtis and Jeanette Jennison Guard, entered the National Army as a private in June 1918. After a training period of about four months in a Depot Brigade at Camp Sherman, he was transferred to Evacuation Hospital Unit No. 28, a company of about 230 men. this company embarked on the George Washington and arrived at Brest, France on November 9, 1918.
Owing to the signing of the armistice at this time, orders were then changed and Unit 28 was detailed for relief duty at Belfort, on the Alsatia frontier and at Nantes. The company adopted the Lorrain Cross as a shoulder insignia because of the occupation advanced sector at Belford.
While working as Laboratory Assistant at Nantes, Guard became ill and for this reason was sent back to the States in April 1919. Discharge followed in August, 1919.
