MILLSBORO - Bailey Guard of Millsboro died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in his home. He was 81. Mr. Guard was born in Park Ridge, Ill., son of the late Samuel and Kathryn Darnell Guard.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving briefly in the U.S. Navy and then in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot instructor for a total of three and a half years, and was discharged in 1945 at the rank of first lieutenant.
Mr. Guard was formerly of Bethesda, Md., and had served as the staff director for the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elza Marques Guard, in 2000; and a sister, Georgia Guard. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Strauss Guard of Millsboro; two daughters, Jacyra Guard of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gloria Guard of Philadelphia; a son, John David Guard of Los Angeles; a brother, Samuel R. Guard of Chicago; three grandchildren, Jessica Natali Malka, Gregory Guard Natali and Julia Darnell Mahoney; and a great-granddaughter, Jasmine Mutterperl.
Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will follow in St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
