Youth Drowned from Schooner in Pontchartrain
Mandeville, La., Feb. 16. -- Newton Garic, 18 years old, was drowned in Lake Pontchartrain at 9:30 a.m. today when he stumbled while walking along the deck of an oyster schooner outward bound from Mandeville and fell overboard, the body being brought here where his mother and other relatives reside. Young Garic was a native of New Orleans and the body will be taken there for burial.
George Glockner, captain and owner of the oyster boat, was taking his craft to the Louisiana marshes with a small crew. A stiff north-west wind was blowing and the schooner was making fast time. It was rounding Goose Point, ten or twelve miles from here, when the accident occurred. One of the crew hurled a broad plank in the water when he saw Garic fall from the flying schooner, knowing that the youth was a good swimmer and hoping he might swim to the plank. The schooner was swung around, Captain Glockner leaping into a skiff that trailed behind and rowing as rapidly as possible to the spot.
The youth fought hard to keep afloat but was impeded by his heavy clothing and sank the last time as his employer neared him in the skiff. Captain Glockner and the others who saw the drowning worked steadily for three hours before the body was brought to the surface. Young Garic is survived by his mother, Mr. Rudy Bauers, his step-father, two brothers and two sisters.
