Felder Jr., Henry David

A native and lifelong resident of Livingston Parish, he was born in Springfield on Dec. 13, 1919. He died of natural causes on Friday, May 6, 2005, in Ann Arbor, Mich., at approximately 11:30 a.m. while playing golf at the University of Michigan in celebration of his youngest granddaughter's pending law school graduation. While on the 13th fairway, and surrounded by his daughter, granddaughter and good friend, Stephen Trickey, he laid his head on his granddaughter's shoulder and was called home. He was 85 and had lived in Denham Springs for the past 50 years. He was a retired real estate broker, owner of Felder 's Realty, a notary public and former owner of Felder 's Auto Sales. He and his wife also owned and operated Felder 's Texaco in Denham Springs for many years. He is survived by his only child, Cynthia Felder Fayard of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; former son-in-law, Calvin C. Fayard Jr. of New Orleans; three grandchildren, Chalyn Cynthia Fayard of Baton Rouge, Cathryn Caroline Fayard of Ann Arbor, and his good buddy and best pal, Calvin C. "Trey" Fayard III of New Orleans; sister, Dorothy Felder Horvath; sisters-in-law, Ella Mae Vampran and Iris Lauzervich, both of Maurepas; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his adored wife of 49 years, Rita Lauzervich Felder ; his parents, Henry David Felder and Mary Causey Felder ; brothers, Roy, Rufus, R.Q., Lester, Earlo and Mayhew Felder ; and sisters, Eileen Felder Hoover, Lillian Felder Barnum and Vivian Felder White.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Iceland during World War II. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and was stationed in Fort Sill, Okla., where he served as an Army specialist in artillery and was responsible for strategic battle plan design and weapons instruction. He left the Army in 1952 as a captain and returned to Louisiana, where he served as commander of the Tucker A. Gregoire American Legion Post 258 in Springfield. He also was a member of the Ellis Facundus American Legion Post 178 in Denham Springs. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Denham Springs and also a Mason and Shriner. He loved his country and believed strongly in being politically active; and, although unsuccessful, he offered himself for public office on numerous occasions. Words alone cannot begin to express the extent to which his loss will be felt by those who knew and loved him. He enjoyed meeting people of all ages and always treated his fellow man with dignity and respect. He was a kind, loving and gentle man who lived life to the fullest. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who cared intensely for his family, friends and his beloved dogs, Rambo and Fifi. He loved LSU sports, cooking and being on the river. An avid golfer, he played to a handicap of eight and won numerous championships. He had five holes-in-one during his golfing career and shot his age twice. In later years, his zest for life included traveling around the world. He was always quick with a joke, a pat on the back or to lend a hand to those in need. His loyalty, unfailing honesty and genuine joy in life will be sorely missed by all who had the honor and privilege of knowing and loving him for the past 85 years. He will be remembered for the love and laughter he brought to the lives of all of his family and friends. The warmth of his soul and the depth of his heart will live on in our memories forever. Special thanks to the Clyde and Carrie LaPorte family for their love and caring during his last few years, as he considered them part of his family. Visitation was Tuesday, May 10, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs. Visiting at First United Methodist Church, 319 Mattie St., Denham Springs, on Wednesday, May 11, from 8 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Interment in Denham Springs Cemetery.
