Jax chairman L.B. Fabacher dies in Gulfport at age 93
Lawrence Bartholomew Fabacher, the former president and chairman of the board of Jackson Brewery in New Orleans, died Thursday at his home in Gulfport, Miss. He was 93.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Interment will be in Lake Lawn Mausoleum.
Mr. Fabacher was the son of Lawrence B. Fabacher, who founded the French Quarter brewery in 1890. Mr. Fabacher started working in the brewery in 1908, and he became president in 1923 when his father died.
He retained that title until January 1969, when he was named chairman of the board. Lawrence J. Fabacher, one of his sons, succeeded him.
The brewery, whose best-known product was Jax Beer, remained in family control until December 1970, when Meister Brau Inc., a Chicago food and beverage corporation, bought a controlling interest in the Decatur Street business. In 1974, production stopped because the brewery was saddled with debts. The building is being transformed into a complex of apartments, offices, restaurants and shops.
A New Orleans native, Mr. Fabacher was a 1910 graduate of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Gulfport, where he had lived for the past 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Agnes Stampley Fabacher of Gulfport; two sons, Lawrence Fabacher of Mandeville and Robert Fabacher of New Orleans; a daughter, Charlotte Ward of Metairie; and a sister, Edna D'Antoni of New Orleans.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral. Services from lakelawn Metairie Funeral Home on Saturday, April 21, 1984 at 2 o'clock p.m. Interment in Lakelawn Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Visitation and rosary were conducted Friday night at the Riemann Funeral Home in Gulfport.
