FABACHER, NOTED RESTAURANT MAN AND BREWER, DIES
Elevated to Knighthood by Pope for Services to Church
Lawrence Fabacher, president of Jackson Brewing Company and for many years a leading restaurant man of the South, died yesterday morning at his home, 5705 St. Charles Avenue. He was 60 years old. Death resulted from an attack of angina pectoris which he suffered July 10 while in the Whitney-Central National bank. Complications, including pneumonia, set up in a few days ago, and though Mr. Fabacher rallied, a relapse resulted in his death.
Burial will take place in Metairie cemetery following requiem mass at 11 o'clock this morning in Holy Name of Jesus church, Loyola university campus, whose main altar of white Carra marble Mr. Fabacher donated to the church several years ago.
Mr. Fabacher will be buried attired in the uniform of a Knight of St. Gregory to which dignity he was elevated by the late Pope Pius X for distinguished services to the church. The investiture of Mr. Fabacher with the knighthood was the occasion of pontifical services in St. Louis Cathedral March 27, 1910, the late Archbishop Blenk pontificating and preaching the sermon. Mr. Fabacher was devoted to the interests of his church and made many donations in its behalf.
Restaurant is Far Famed
The name of Fabacher long ago became a synonym for the best in the culinary art and a reference to "Fabacher's" anywhere where good cooking was discussed meant New Orleans, for the restaurant conducted by Mr. Fabacher here was known all over the country, and in other parts of the world. Mr. Fabacher amassed a fortune in the restaurant business, and was successful later in his direction of the Jackson Brewing Company. His home on St. Charles avenue was one of the show places of New Orleans.
Mr. Fabacher was born near Crowley, La., on his parents' farm, June 4, 1863. He came to New Orleans in 1880, working first with his father and mother in a restaurant established by them on Gravier street near Magazine street. A few years later the Fabacher restaurant business was removed to Royal street, and soon became famous as the home of the best in cooking.
In 1887 Mr. Fabacher purchased the restaurant business from his father, already having become a partner. Immediately he began improving and enlarging the place to accomodate an increasing trade. In less than a year after he assumed its management, Mr. Fabacher was operating the largest and most successful establishment of the kind in the South. The place was open twenty-four hours a day.
Heads Brewing Concern.
About twenty-seven years ago the stockholders of the Jackson Brewing Company after much persuasion finally prevailed upon Mr. Fabacher to accept the presidency of the company.
Although Mr. Fabacher was essentially a home man, he was active and generous in public activites, particularly those of a charitable nature. He was looked upon as one of the best friends the orphan asylums had. He was for many years president of the board of the Louisiana Leper's Home at Carville, was long president of the St. Louis Cathedral conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, was a promoter of the League of the Sacred Heart, a member of the Men's Solidality of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the Holy Name Society. He was for thirty years a director of St. Mary's Orphan Boys Asylum.
He was a close friend of the late Archbishop Janssens, as well as of his successors, Archbishop Chaplele and Archbishop Blenk. It was at the instance of Archbishop Blenk that Mr. Fabacher was knighted by Pope Pius X.
Mr. Fabacher was one of the oldest members of the Southern Yacht Club and was a director of Whitney-Central National bank. He was attending a meeting of the board of directors of this institution when stricken in July.
Mr. Fabacher was married November 17, 1885, to Miss Antoinette Wagner in Holy Trinity church of which parish the Wagner family were old members.
Mr. Fabacher is survived by his widow and seven children, Mrs. O. Trorlicht, Mrs. J. H. Edwards Mrs. B. D'Antoni, Lawrence Jr., Paul, John and Joseph, beside six brothers and two sisters.
Members of the New Orleans Lodge of Elks, of which Mr. Fabacher was a member, have been requested to attend the funeral by Parham Werlein, exalted ruler. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery.
Pallbearers at the funeral will be B. S. D'Antoni, J. H. Edwards, O. A. Trorlicht, Irving Saal, Joseph Buckley, Gus Oertling, L. A. Douglas and Charles Bacharach.

Lawrence Fabacher Buried in Metairie Cemetery
Lawrence Fabacher, well known business man and restaurateur who died at his residence 5705 St. Charles avenue Wednesday morning, was buried in Metairie cemetery yesterday after funeral services at the Holy Name of Jesus church, Loyola campus, at 11 o'clock.
Besides members of the St. Louis Cathedral conference, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, League of the Sacred Heart, Men's Solidality of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Holy Name Society, with all of which he had been identified prominently for many years, the funeral was attended by a large number of business men.
The solemn requiem mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Navin, S. J., officiating, assisted by the Rev. Father Maring S. J. as deacon and the Rev. Father Semple as sub-deacon. The Rev. F. Emile Matherne, S. J. provincial, preached.
The pallbearers were: B. S. D'Antoni, J. H. Edwards, O. A. Trorlicht, Irving Saal, Joseph Buckley, Gus Pertling, L. A. Douglas and Charles Bacharach.
Born on his father's farm near Crowley, La., June 4, 1863, Mr. Fabacher removed to New Orleans in 1880 with his parents and associated himself with them in a restaurant which they established at Gravier and Magazine streets. A few years later the restaurant was removed to Royal street and soon became famous as one of the most renowned eating places in the South.
In 1887 Mr. Fabacher purchased his father's interest in the business and began improvements for the accomodation of his growing trade. In less than a year after he had taken over the management, he was operating one of the largest establishments of the kind in this section of the country.
As president of the Jackson Brewing Company with which he had been identified for about twenty-six years, Mr. Fabacher was instrumental in increasing the business of the plant.
Although active in business circles, Mr. Fabacher was essentially a home man. He devoted a great deal of his time to the religious organizations of which he was a member. He was known as a friend of the orphans for whom he had always manifested a great friendship.
Because of his characteristic work, he was made a Knight of St. George by the late Pope Pius X. His investure of the knighthood was the occasion for a pontifical mass at the St. Louis Cathedral March 27, 1910.
Mr. Fabacher is survived by his widow and seven children, Mrs. O. Trorlicht, Mrs. J. H. Edwards, Mrs. B. D'Antoni, Lawrence Jr., Paul, John and Joseph, besides six brothers and two sisters.

Restauranteur and Jackson Brewing Company president. He was buried in 1923 in the uniform of the Knights of St. Gregory, an honor conferred on him by Pope Piux X. He made his money in the restaurant business and lived in a showplace on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. Fabacher's obituary noted that his restaurant at Royal and Iberville (no longer his restaurant, but another one owned by the Brennan family, "Mr. B's", is located at that site) "meant New Orleans wherever gourmets and epicures gathered." The Lawrence Fabacher tomb is one of the most beautiful in the cemetery.
