WBR Jury Indicts Men
Two members of the United Mine Workers Local 12900 were indicted yesterday by the West Baton Rouge Parish grand jury in the beating of a striking UMW worker during the recent Ethyl Corp. strike.
lndicted for simple battery were Otis C. Tynes, secretary-treasurer of the local union, and member Emmette F. Tucker. They were accused of beating Winston Durnin, 2755 Seneca St., at Paul's Steak House in West Baton Rouge Parish about 1 a.m. Aug. 3.
It was reported that the two men beat Durnin because he had crossed the picket line at the Ethyl plant. It was also reported that at least one of the attackers admitted later he had learned that the victim had not crossed
the picket line.
Durnin is reported to be a cripple who uses crutches to walk.
Bench warrants were issued for both Tucker and Tynes and bonds were set at $500.

Durnin Issues Statement on Beating Case
Winston Durnin. 2755 Seneca St., yesterday issued the following statement relative to the indictment of two other men by a West Baton Rouge Parish Grand Jury Monday on charges of beating him.
"It was reported in yesterday's paper that I had been accused of crossing the picket lines at Ethyl Corp. during the recent strike. The reported altercation that I was in had nothing to do with the union affairs at all.
"I did not cross picket lines nor do i ever have any intention of doing so. Also erroneously reported in this article was that I am unable to walk without crutches. l have never used crutches in my life. Also I want to state that I had nothing to do with the indictment of the two men mentioned as I did not file charges and did not wish the men to be indicted. As a matter of fact, I did everything in my power to keep this case from coming up."
The two men indicted were Otis C. Tynes, secretary-treasurer of United Mine Workers Local 12900, and Emmette F. Tucker, a union member. Durnln is also a member of the union.
