A.K. Durnin: A quarter century in Baton Rouge area auto business: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Advocate, The (Baton Rouge, LA) - Friday, April 28, 1989
Deceased Name: A.K. Durnin: A quarter century in Baton Rouge area auto business
A. K. Durnin, a native of St. Helena Parish and noted Baton Rouge automobile dealer, died this week. He left behind an indelible mark on the automobile business and a family dealership that has continued to thrive since his retirement seven years ago.
Durnin began selling cars "part-time" while working for Ethyl in Baton Rouge and, in 1958, joined Holmes Ford as a salesman. Positions with several Baton Rouge dealerships led to a sales management job with a Hammond dealership and later a job with the St. Gabriel American Motors outlet. That AMC dealer was Price LeBlanc and the two men were soon partners in the Gonzales Chrysler-Plymouth dealership.
When the Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Denham Springs became available in 1971, Durnin decided it was his opportunity for independence. Following its purchase and three years of growth he moved the franchise to Baton Rouge in 1974.
His quarter century in the automobile business was characterized by his progressive methods and soft spoken ways and his influence remains, a part of his legacy.
