LEHON MAN CLAIMS HE WAS ATTACKED
---------------------------------------------------------
Says Strikers Surrounded His Machine and Beat Him
---------------------------------------------------------
Fate was against Joseph Clare, a Dan S. Lehon guard at the Jahncke ship-building plant Friday afternoon. The blowing out of an automobile tire halted him among alleged strikers, who are said to have jumped upon and beat him. The blow-out occurred at Rampart and St. Maurice avenue.
Within a few seconds a swarm of alleged strikers surrounded the machine, despite the fact that Clare was armed with a revolver and a black jack. He received several bruises and lacerations, which were treated at the Charity hospital, after which he was arrested for carrying concealed weapons.
Subsequently the police arrested four strikers at Forstall and Rampart streets following a "free-for-all" fight, during which about fifty shots were fired. Police were unable to ascertain the cause of the trouble. The men arrested are: Joseph Battier, 21, of 1630 Elysian Fields avenue: John Howard, 24, of 1216 Annunciation: Joseph Donnow, 18, of 903 Independence street and Dewey White, 43, of 722 Spain street.
