Police Reports
Driver Loses Control, Car Runs Into Canal
Man Booked on Counts After Plunge
A motorist suddenly found himself, a fellow passenger, his dog and his car in a canal at Downman and Morrison roads Friday night. Police said he apparently lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road shortly after 8 p. m.
Booked with driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving was Fred Donnow, 38, 7915 Marquis.
Taken to Charity hospital, where her condition was not considered "serious," was the passenger, identified by a hospital spokesman as Julia Lauland, 45, 7919 Marquis.
Ptm. S. S. Marbrough of the accident investigation division said the vehicle driven by Donnow was heading on Downman rd. toward Chef Menteur hwy., when it swerved at the junction of the two roadways, toward Morrison canal on the right. Donnow was reported not injured in the accident.
The car's two occupants were aided from the partially submerged, overturned vehicle by passerby and police crash truck crewmen.
The dog, a Weimaraner, also was trapped in the car.
The district attorney's office will be consulted on the matter, police said.

2 PERSONS HURT IN HEADON CRASH
Two men were injured in a headon crash of two automobiles about 3:30 p. m. Thursday in the 9400 block of Hayne blvd. Six traffic tickets were issued by police as result of the collision.
One of the drivers, Frederick G. Donnow, 39, 7919 Marquis, was taken to Charity hospital by a police emergency unit. He was X-rayed for possible head injuries.
Moses Phillips, 76, 3730 Gen. Pershing, was treated at Baptist hospital for lacerations of the face and body. He was discharged after treatment. He was a passenger in a car driven by his son, Nathan Phillips, 48, same address, ploce said. The younger Phillips was not injured, they added.
Third District officers, Ptn. August Dupuy and Martin Gaillot, issued tickets to Donnow for reckless driving, causing damage and injury by improper passing and for having no driver's license, license plate or brake tag.
Two Second District officers, who questioned Donnow at the hospital, booked him with disturbing the peace and violating a fire ordinance.
They said Donnow abused the nurses and repeatedly tried to light a cigarette in the hospital's accident room.
