VINCENT J. DERBES, RETIRED TULANE DOCTOR, DIES AT 79
Dr. Vincent J. Derbes, the retired chief of dermatology at Tulane Medical Center, died Saturday of a stroke while attending a family reunion at Blowing Rock, N.C. He was 79.

Dr. Derbes, who was born in New Orleans, received undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University. After an internship at Charity Hospital, he taught anatomy at Tulane University School of Medicine from 1935 to 1937.

He was staff physician at Stanocola Employees Medical and Surgical Clinic in Baton Rouge until 1940. Then he held a fellowship in internal medicine and allergy at Vaughan-Graham Clinic in Richmond, Va.

He returned to Tulane in 1941 as an instructor in medicine and medical officer of Tulane's Hutchinson Memorial Clinic.

In 1948, Dr. Derbes was appointed an associate professor and became a full professor six years later. He held that position until his retirement in 1978, when he went into private practice.

The medical school named him its outstanding alumnus in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Musgrove Derbes; a daughter, Nancy Anne Derbes of Silver Springs, Md.; a son, David R. Derbes of Chicago; a brother, Arthur J. Derbes of New Orleans; two sisters, Vera Derbes Schexnayder of Donaldsonville, La., and Hazel Derbes Guidry of New Orleans; and three grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be said Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 448 Metairie Road. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
