Charles Joseph Derbes, Jr. died at home on August 2, 2010 at age 93. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 7, 1917, the son of the late Charles J. and Elise Generes Derbes.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marie Cronvich Derbes, and his seven children: Charles Joseph Derbes III, Marie Elyse Derbes, Sheryl Derbes Brown, Lewis Joseph Derbes (Sheila), Jean Derbes Ratte (Geoff), Denice Derbes (Michael Vales), and Janis Derbes deVerges (Paul); twelve grandchildren: Charles Brown, Bryan Brown (Donna), Lewis Derbes Jr. (Sheri), Megan Derbes McCarthy (Dennis), Kathryn Derbes Ratte, Emily Ratte Pidot (Philip), John Ratte, Hanlon deVerges, Douglas deVerges, Courtney deVerges, Andrew Vales and Christian Vales; and eleven great grandchildren: Lewis III, Molly, Garrett and Elliott Derbes; Elisabeth, Andrew and Audrey Brown; and Colleen, Mairin, Elisabeth and Delaney McCarthy. Survivors also include his brother Dr. Lawrence Derbes and two sisters Virginia Thorpe and Beverly Landrieu. He was preceded in death by five sisters: Myrtle Walsh, Elisemary Walsh, Eleanor Bennison, Carmen Derbes and Rosemary Withers and three brothers: Rev. Louis Joseph Derbes CM, John Derbes and J. Roy Derbes.
Mr. Derbes was a 1937 graduate of Jesuit High School and attended Loyola University where he was a member of its last intercollegiate football team. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in March 1946. He began his real estate brokerage firm on January 1, 1947. He developed Moisant Place, Sheryl Park, Colonial Club Estates, David Drive, Derbes Park and Providence Memorial Park. Mr. Derbes was a member of the New Orleans Metropolitan Association of Realtors and a founding member of the Jefferson Board of Realtors, its President in 1965-66 and its Realtor of the Year in 1971. He was a member of the Louisiana Realtors Association, its President in 1970, and its Realtor of the Year in 1973 as well as a Director of the National Association of Realtors.
He was a founding member of Merchants Bank in 1955, which was sold in 1960. In 1962, along with Frank Ellis, he founded First Metropolitan Bank, which merged with Hibernia National Bank in 1985. Mr. Derbes served as Chairman of the Board of First Metropolitan Bank, Chairman of the Board of Hibernia Bank in Jefferson Parish in 1985, and as a Director of Hibernia National Bank until retirement at age 70.
He was the proud Captain of Retreat Group 11 at Manresa House of Retreats since 1950. Mr. Derbes also served as the General Chairman of the Archbishop's Community Appeal in 1973 and remained active as a Captain for over 35 years. He was a member of the original Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation in 1976. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Knight Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Knight of St. Louis, and Knight of St. Gregory. Mr. Derbes also served on the Board of Trustees of the Academy of the Sacred Heart and of Loyola University. He was a member of the Parent's Council of St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana and a member of the advisory boards of Jesuit High School, the Archbishop's Real Estate Board and the Knights of Columbus.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church; 444 Metairie Rd Metairie, LA 70005 on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 12:00 PM. Private interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service.
