Out-of-state brewers cut down once-dominant N. O. industry

Beer lovers recall how once-dominant New Orleans industry collapsed in stages, swept away by rising costs and aggressive out-of-state bewers that advertised heavily.
Lawrence D'Antoni, 62, grandson of longtime Jackson Brewery owner Lawrence Fabacher and a former Jax sales manager, recalls how companies like Anheuser-Busch and Schlitz built plants in Florida and Texas in the early 1960s, carving up the markets of Jax and other New Orleans brewers.
"We had older equipment and it required more people on the line," he said. "We kept (showing) a loss in volume - at almost the same cost of production."
Jax closed in 1974, then Falstaff in 1978, each after prolonged labor disputes. Both are now brewed by Pearl Brewing Co. in Texas and are still available in New Orleans.

Lawrence F. D'Antoni, a retired sales manager for the Jackson Brewing Co., died Monday of a heart attack at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 72. Mr. D'Antoni was born in New Orleans and lived in Picayune, Miss., for the past five years. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School and Tulane University. He was a Navy lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II. Survivors include two sons, Richard B. and Lawrence F. D'Antoni Jr., both of New Orleans; a daughter, Deborah Russo; two brothers, Donald J. and Blaise S. D'Antoni Jr., both of New Orleans; a sister, Donna D. Morales of Bend, Ore.; and a grandson. A Mass will be said today at 2:30 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Burial will be private.
