PATROLMAN WOUNDED
James Daniels, Supernumerary, Suffers Injury to Finger
While leaving the Fifth precinct station Wednesday afternoon, Supernumerary Patrolman Daniels picked up a high-powered rifle catridge, and began to examine it. He then drew a key from his pocket and taped the end of the cartrige. The key struck the cap, and the cartridge exploded.
Parolman Daniels boarded a car for the Charity Hospital, where it was found his left index finger had been cut and powder burned. He was able to return to his home, but not to work.

POLICE TURN TABLES ON 'HOSTILE' GANG
If an aggrieved citizen feels like beating up a policeman, it is better that he keep his plans a secret.
Policemen James L. Daniels and Michael Baradat were patrolling their beats Thursday night when a friend told them that a gang of men was lying in wait for them for the purpose of administering a beating.
Drawing their revolvers, the two policemen surprised the gang at Toledano and Tchoupitoulas streets. At the points of their guns they made this hostile crew line up for inspection. They recognized the following and arrested them on the charge of being suspicious characters: Chris Decker, 8244 Annunciation street; William Miller, 623 Harmony street; Jacob Heigle, 3233 Tchoupitoulas street.
According to the police, Decker and Miller had been arrested by them two weeks before and that arrest formed the only known motive for revenge. Affidavits against the three men were filed Friday morning.

NEGRO SHOT WHEN HE RESISTS POLICE
Isaiah Prince, 38 years old, a negro, living at 1728 Aubrey street, is near death in the Charity Hospital from a bullet wound inflicted by Patrolman Edward Alberts during a struggle at Lopez and Banks streets early Thursday morning. The negro is alleged to have attempted to use a hatchet on Alberts and Patrolman James Daniels.
According to the police, Patrolman Daniels met Prince at Lopez and Banks streets shortly after 3 a. m. and asked him where he was going with a sack he carried. Unable to give a good account of himself, Prince was arrested but broke away from Daniels and is said to have grabbed the policeman's revolver.
While Daniels and Prince were scuffling, Patrolman Alberts arrived and at this juncture, it is charged, the negro took a hatchet from the sack he had dropped. Daniels cried out to the other policeman to shoot because his life was in danger and Alberts fired, the bullet entering Prince's left side and lodged in the spine.
At the Charity Hospital, it was reported Prince had little chance for recovery. The police believe he was on his way to commit a robbery when Patrolman Daniels accosted him. Prince claims he was going to work on the river at the time.
The wounded negro gave his name and address as Louis Washington, 1728 Aubrey street. Late Thursday afternoon William Prince, who lives at that address, identified him as his brother, Isaiah, whom he said he has not seen in years. The police say Isaiah Prince was released recently from the state penitentiary after serving a term for larceny.

300 INVOLVED IN BIG POLICE SHAKEUP HERE
Malony Transfers Officers to Speed Up war on Gambling Schemes
"If a man wants to remain on the police force of New Orleans he must work. I believe these transfers will be for the good of the department."
With those words Superintendent Malony began one of the greatest shakeups of the department Friday evening of all-time. Every member of the uniform ranks, before the grade of captain was shifted to some other district of the city, over 300 men are involved.
It has been the contention of the superintendent that hand-books and other forms of gambling can not operate on the beat of a patrolman who has had that sector for months without his knowledge. During the past week plain-clothes patrolmen and detectives have operated out of headquarters and made arrests of this nature that passed the 100 mark. If it is believed that the revelation of these conditions prompted the wholesale transfer......

CAPTAIN DANIELS INJURED IN CRASH, DIES AT HOSPITAL
Number of Automobile Fatalities in City Increased to 22
-----------------------------------------
Captain of Detectives James L. Daniels, 43 years old, 2727 St. Claude avenue, died at Charity hospital at 3 p. m. Tuesday as a result of injuries received at 4 a. m. Sunday when a police automobile in which he was riding with Detective Mateo J. Azcona, 3322 Tulane avenue, is said by police to have collided with a taxicab at Louisiana and South Claiborne avenues.
The death of Captain Daniels increased the number of automobile accident fatalities in New Orleans since January 1 to 22.
Azcona Improves
Charity hospital physicians late Tuesday reported improvement in the condition of Detective Azcona, who is suffering from concussion of the brain and a fractured skull. Captain Daniels' injuries included concussion of the brain and fracture of seven ribs, one of which penetrated the left lung.
The city detectives were proceeding on Louisiana Avenue Parkway to Toledano and Carondelet streets in response to a call that an armed man was prowling in the neighborhood.
After the collision, police say, the taxicab, driven by John Summas, 1525 Camp street, ran across the neutral ground and crashed into the side of a grocery at 3412 South Claiborne avenue. George Plant, 54 years old, 7627 St. Charles avenue, a passenger in the taxi, received lacerations of the left hand and the nose, while Summas received internal injuries.
Reckless Driving Charged
Charges of reckless driving and causing serious injuries to Captain Daniels and Detective Azcona were filed in criminal district court Monday against Summas, and Assistant District Attorney Chandler C. Luzenberg, Jr., will determine today whether the charge should be changed to manslaughter.
Captain Daniels had been a member of the police department since 1916. He was promoted to the grade of detective August 1, 1925, and was made captain of detectives on November 28, 1930. For several years Daniels was detailed in the office of the district attorney and made special investigations for District Attorney Eugene Stanley. About six months ago he was transferred back to the detective bureau.
FUNERAL THURSDAY
Captain Daniels, who was a native of New Orleans, is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Grace Dodson, one daughter, Miss Anna Daniels, and two sons, Harry and James L. Daniels, Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home of Jacob Schoen and Son, 519 Elysian Fields Avenue, at 9 a. m. Thursday, to be followed by requeim mass at the Holy Trinity church. Interment will be in St. Roch cemetery.
Superintendent of Police George Reyer announced Tuesday night that 50 policemen will be assigned to attend the funeral of Captain Daniels in a body.
