New Castle Man Drowns in Ohio
Gene Clements, 34, of New Castle, drowned Sunday afternoon, July 25, near Big Bone Island in Ohio River north of Patriot.
John Robe, Gallatin County Coroner, Warsaw, Ky., said thé victim apparently developed stomach cramps which led to accidental drowning.
.Mr. Clements was skiing on river with wife and daughter in boat, shortly after eating lunch, according to Mrs. Clements, when her husband dove from front of craft to remove skis from water. She never saw him again.
State conservation officers, Joe Backer, Switzerland county, John Stivers, Ohio county and Howard "Buck" Hempfling, Dearborn county, and local citizens dragged the area until dusk Sunday in search of the body.
The body was recovered at 9 a.m., Monday. Removed to Humphery McClure Funeral home in Rising Sun to be prepared for return to Macer Funeral Home in New Castle for services Thursday, July 29.
