John Joseph Capretto died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Raphaela (Prestia) Capretto, and son, Robert. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Eleanore Black Capretto, his children, John M. Capretto (Rose), David Capretto (Lynne), Carol Billon (Jimmy), Linda DePascual (Manuel), Gina Hartdegen (Jason) and Mark Capretto; his grandchildren, Christopher Capretto (Elizabeth), Daniel Capretto (Peyton), Jeffrey Billon, Danielle Billon Prendergast (Dan), Andrew Billon, Sean Hillis (Casey), Alexander DePascual, Gabriella DePascual, Lauren Hartdegen Crain (Stephen), Allison Hartdegen, Emily Hartdegen, and his great grandchildren, Jacob Capretto, Emma Prendergast, Charlie Elizabeth Hillis, Nora and Gus Crain.
John attended Holy Cross High School and then entered the U.S. Navy in 1943. He proudly served his country in both the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines during World War II. He was an active member of the V.F.W. Post 6640. John worked as a shipping clerk for 40 years in the New Orleans Clerks and Checkers Local #1497. He volunteered at the World War II Museum since it opened its doors and loved talking with the visitors about his experiences piloting the Higgins landing craft during the war. John enjoyed many trips and activities with the Jolly Jacks Social Club and was particularly known for his love of a good card game. He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and Metairie and was a parishioner of St. Clement of Rome.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend John's funeral mass at 12:00 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Metairie Cemetery.
