DRUNKEN DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER FATAL COLLISION
New Orleans Woman Is Hurled from Auto in Crash on Highway
Catapulted from her son's car in a head on collision with another car alleged to have been operated by a drunken driver, on the highway between Mississippi City and Biloxi shortly before 10 o'clock Sunday night, Mrs. John J. Prendergast, 54 years old, 1520 Melpomene street, died a short time later in the King's Daughters' hospital, Gulfport.
Mrs. Prendergast was seated in the front seat of the car with her son, John J. Prendergast, Jr., who was driving. Her two daughters, Mrs. Albert R. French, Jr., of Pass Christian, Miss., and Miss Alice Prendergast were also occupants of the car.
The Prendergast car was crashed into, according to the police, by a car operated by Lonnie Thompson, Hattiesburg, Miss., salesman, and driven on the wrong side of the road. Thompson was lodged in the Gulfport jail on a charge of manslaughter, reckless driving and operating a car while intoxicated, after he had been treated at the King's Daughters' hospital for minor injuries.
Mrs. Prendergast was the wife of J. J. Prendergast, engineer employed by the Yahoo and Mississippi Valley railroad. She had been spending the week-end with Mrs. French at Pass Christian and went for a ride with her children early Sunday night. The party was returning to Pass Christian when the accident occurred.
She is survived by her husband and the following daughters and sons: Mrs. French, Pass Christian; the Misses Catherine, Alice, Anna and Margaret Prendergast, all of 1520 Melpomene street; and George E., John J. Jr., and Henry Prendergast, of the same address.

DRIVER IN GULF COAST CRASH OUT UNDER $1000 BOND
Body of Mrs. Prendergast Sent Here for Interment
Gulfport, Miss., July 4 -- Lawrence H. Thompson, charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Mrs. John J. Prendergast of New Orleans, which followed an automobile accident on the beach near the Gulf Coast Military academy last night, was released at 2 o'clock this morning on $1000 bond signed by Mayor J. W. Milner and E. Toms, cashier of the Bank of Richton, of Richton, Miss., occupants of the car driven by Thompson. Another occupant of the car was David Thomas, also of Richton, who was said to be the owner of the car.
Officers who investigated the scene of the wreck last night said that the marks on the car showed that the Prendergast car was on the right side of the road, while the car driven by Thompson was on the wrong side. The two cars collided head-on. Mrs. Prendergast, who suffered a fracture of the skull, died at King's Daughters' hospital, where she was taken following the accident. Mrs. Prendergast's son, J. J. Prendergast Jr., who was driving the car, and two daughters escaped injury. Thompson suffered cuts on the head and was taken to the hospital, where he was placed under arrest by officers.
Thompson, who was charged with manslaughter, will be arraigned at a hearing before Justice T. F. Evans, July 8.
The body of Mrs. Prendergast was sent to New Orleans this morning for interment. Funeral services will be held from P. J. McMahon and Sons' funeral home at 3 p. m. Tuesday.

MAN IN FATAL CAR CRASH IS CLEARED BY MAGISTRATE
State's Witnesses' Story Of Drunken Driving Discounted by Defense
Gulfport, Miss., July 21 -- Charges against Lonnie H. Thompson, Hattiesburg, wholesale grocery salesman, growing from an automobile collision on the Beach Boulevard near Gulf Coast Military academy the night of July 3, in which Mrs. John J. Prendergast of New Orleans suffered injuries from which she died a few minutes later in the King's Daughters' hospital here, today were dismissed by Justice of the Peace T. F. Evans.
The affidavit against Thompson charged him with operating an automobile while intoxicated and causing the death of Mrs. Prendergast. A large number of witnesses for the state and for the defense conflicted sharply.
The four surviving occupants of the Prendergast automobile swore to the presence of only two cars on the section of road where the accident occurred, and said the Thompson car, swerving from side to side on the highway, was on the wrong side of the road when it struck them. State's witnesses also testified that Thompson and other members of his party had been drinking.
Defense witnesses, chiefly the four men in the Thompson car, said the road was filled with lines of automobiles moving in opposite directions, and that the Prendergast car crashed into their car as its driver tried to run around an automobile ahead of it. None of the occupants of the Thompson car had been drinking, they said.
The damage to both cars was described as consisting chiefly of smashed right front fenders, which the state's attorney contended was proof that the Thompson car was on the wrong side. Thompson's companions at the time of the accident were Hugh Thomas, agent for the Standard Oil Company at Richton, Miss.; his brother, David Thomas, cashier of the Bank of Richton and owner of the automobile in which the four men were riding, and W. Burnham Hickman, Hattiesburg. They were on their way to Gulfport to see the Fourth of July ball game between the Hattiesburg and Gulfport teams, they said.
With Mrs. Prendergast at the time of the crash were her son, John J. Prendergast, Jr., of New Orleans; her daughters, Miss Alice Prendergast of New Orleans and Mrs. A. R. French, Jr., of Pass Christian, and Mrs. Albert Namias of Pass Christian, friend of Mrs. French, who held a baby in her arms. Mrs. Prendergast suffered a broken neck as a result of the crash and the four men in the Thompson car all suffered minor injuries, chiefly cuts and bruises.
